Add a Launchpad

For now, we will assume that an organizational admin has already published their desired applications after installing and onboarding them to the Sandbox image. The next step is to create one or more Launchpads that can then be assigned to their users. The steps below outline how to add a new Launchpad.

  1. First, open the “Launchpads” section listed in the menu on the left side of your Dashboard. From this page, you can add a Launchpad by clicking on the button in the middle of the screen:

  1. A new window will appear, fill out the following fields:

    • Type - Choose between “Application” or “Desktop” Launchpad types. Application launchpads only list onboarded applications, while Desktop launchpads have a single Desktop icon that gives users access to the full Desktop environment.

    • Name: The Launchpad name will appear in the upper left corner of users’ screens.

    • URL name: The name you pick for the URL slug will be appended to the end of your account URL when your users are on their Launchpad. The URL slug is the set of characters that is added to the right hand side of the URL to give the Launchpad a unique URL of the format:[customer_URL]/[organization_URL]/[account_URL]/launchpad/[URL_name]
  2. Click “Add Launchpad” after specifying your settings.

  3. The newly created Launchpad appears as a tab on the upper left side of the “Launchpads” page.

Application vs. Desktop Launchpads

The Frame platform provides two distinct types of Launchpads for end users. Application Launchpads are designed to serve multiple application sets to end users, while Desktop Launchpads provide a single icon that takes the user to a limited Desktop environment. Desktop environments still provide access to applications within the session.

Application Launchpad

The Application Launchpad consists of two sections – “Launchpad” and “Applications.”



Under this section, admins can modify the name, URL name, and available instance types accessible from their Launchpad. Admins can also switch between Application and Desktop Launchpad types and select their background.

Click on the kebab menu in the upper right corner of this section to delete the Launchpad or modify session settings specific to this Launchpad. Read more about session settings by clicking here or navigating to the “Session Conduct” section of Nutanix Frame documentation.


The “Layout” section allows the administrator to choose what applications are displayed on the Launchpad. Enable or disable app visibility by clicking on “Manage Applications” and configuring the toggles.


Enabled applications will show up on the “Layout” section of the page. Click “Save” in the upper right corner of the page to save any changes.

Desktop Launchpad

Desktop Launchpad settings are identical to Application Launchpad settings, however, there is no “Applications” section. Desktop Launchpads only consist of one Desktop icon, so there is no layout configuration necessary.

Customize your Launchpad

Administrators have the option to add their own custom Launchpad background images. Simply click on the background image with the plus symbol listed under “Background image.” Select your desired image from the file browser that launches.



The maximum file size for your custom background image cannot exceed 3 MB.
